With slow and gradual change in elevation, chances of being suffered from high altitude sickness (acute mountain sickness) during Manaslu Circuit Trek is low. There is no specific medicines for the victims of altitude sickness. It can be avoided with proper acclimatization days and maintaining high level of personal hygiene.

Descending at least of 400 to 500 m should work well. Don’t sleep during day and drink adequate water. This will reduce chance of being suffer from AMS. You could take some course in controlled scientific labs. Oxygen level will be reduced and you can try adjusting with that in these artificial labs. At 5169 m in Larke Pass, general oxygen percentage will be 52.

Always keep in mind that first thing about the altitude sickness is not to think about it. Be mentally strong that’s it.

Aftermath of AMS it might end on High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE). Sometimes even without any symptom of AMS people might directly suffered from HAPE or HACE, so mountain sickness is again not something that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness

  • Mild headache, which gets worse on night and especially when you wake up
  • Loss of appetite, no willingness to eat
  • Unstable stomach and you might end on vomiting
  • Intense feel of being week and tired, as it goes worse you even don’t have energy to do any anything
  • Poor sleep, waking up during night
  • Feeling dizzy

Symptoms of HACE & HAPE

  • If it’s High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) then victim is breathless even during stage of rest.
  • If it’s High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) then victim’s skull will appear to be swollen
  • Both HAPE and HACE might be fatal, immediate descend or medical evacuation is recommended for victim’s safety.

Treatment for Acute Mountain Sickness

  • If you can find a Gamow Bag it’s the most useful tool to save patient in case if the descending in not feasible at the moment.
  • For headache Aspiring or Tylenol might be used
  • Prochlorperazine is recommended by doctors for nausea
  • Don’t take sleeping pills for insomnia
  • Diamox might be used for early prevention of Acute Mountain Sickness
  • Most effective way is descending at least four to five hundred meter down from current elevation

Preventive measure for Acute Mountain Sickness

  • Avoid physical exertion (effort)
  • Drink plenty of waters and avoid alcoholic drinks
  • Food with high level of carbohydrate can be consumed
  • Mountain rule is climb and sleep slow (In every gain of 500 to 600 meter allocate rest day)
  • Don’t sleep on day time, stay active
  • If you can’t avoid rapid ascent then it’s prescribed to use Nifedipine (Procardia), a medicine that’s used for controlling high blood pressure
